Here is the step-by-step guide to using a Peak Flow Meter for monitoring lung function:
Step 1: Preparation
Reset the Indicator: Slide the main red indicator marker down to the bottom of the scale (at or below 60 L/min).
Stand or Sit Upright: Position yourself comfortably upright to ensure maximum lung expansion.
Hold Correctly: Hold the device by its body without blocking the side slots or the back vent.
Step 2: Taking the Measurement
Inhale Fully: Take a deep breath in, completely filling your lungs with air.
Place Mouthpiece: Put the mouthpiece in your mouth, seal your lips tightly around it, and keep your tongue away from the opening.
Blow Hard and Fast: Blow out as hard and fast as you can in a single, quick burst (like blowing out birthday candles).
Check the Value: Note the number indicated by the red marker on the scale.
Step 3: Recording & Maintenance
Repeat Three Times: Perform the measurement 3 times in total, resetting the slider to the bottom before each attempt.
Record the Highest Score: Write down the highest of the 3 readings (not the average) in your asthma diary or tracking log.
Clean Regularly: Wash the mouthpiece with warm water and mild soap as recommended by the manufacturer, then let it air dry completely.
Zone Management Tip: Adjust the green, yellow, and red zone sliders based on your personal best reading and your doctor's recommended action plan.
