This is the 5mm IR Transmitter and Receiver pair matched pair used in our IR proximity, White Line or Micromouse sensor. It consists of 5mm 940 nanometer wave length high power IR LED and photodiode having peak sensitivity at 940 nanometer wavelength.
These are through-hole optoelectronic components typically used together as an Infrared (IR) Emitter and Phototransistor/Photodiode Pair.
Top (Dark Blue / Black Cased LED): Infrared Emitting Diode (IR LED). The dark-tinted epoxy filters out ambient visible light, transmitting light in the infrared spectrum (typically around 850 nm to 940 nm).
Bottom (Clear Cased LED): Phototransistor or Photodiode detector. The clear lens allows ambient and infrared light to reach the internal semiconductor junction, converting incoming light into an electrical signal.
